Humans are not only capable of enduring many different kinds of tribulations but are also very resourceful in finding relief and solutions to problems. Arthritis, however, is one of those complaints that causes a lot of discomfort and pain, and it limits the ability to lead a full and active life. We are more prone to suffering from arthritis as we age, but it can sometimes begin earlier in life, especially if we’ve had an injury to one of our joints. This is primarily due to the role inflammation plays in our body.
Inflammation is a normal physiological response by the immune system to repair cellular damage and prevent disease. It functions to dilate blood vessels and increase blood circulation to an area in order to “clean up” and repair damaged tissue, like skin, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Or it stops a pathogen from entering further into the body, like with the redness that surrounds a splinter in the skin. This process works great a majority of the time. However, in some circumstances, it can go awry.
If there has been an injury to your knee, the body swells the tissue and increases inflammation to prevent easy mobility while it heals the injury. If activity is not reduced, chronic inflammation can occur, causing a breakdown in the cartilage that protects joints. Over time, this breakdown causes a complete degradation of the articulating surface of the bones, causing them to grind together or even create bone spurs, which are abnormal deposits of bone. Both of these scenarios cause great pain and result in limited mobility.
The other cause of inflammation is a nutrient-poor diet, such as one high in low-quality vegetable oils, fast food, processed foods, or foods that contribute an imbalanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 oils, among others. This makes an individual more susceptible to a systemic inflammatory crisis. In this case, an individual needs only a minor injury to weaken a joint and cause the body to overreact in repairing the tissue. Chronic inflammation will also cause the immune system to overreact in general and begin attacking the body in various areas. This is the known cause of autoimmune disease and the source of rheumatoid arthritis.
